2016 SALT Training Conference hosted by SPIA-VIU

Fairfax, Virginia, USA – October 24, 2016 – Virginia International University’s School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) graciously hosted the Advocacy Training Conference for Social Action Linking Together (SALT) on Saturday, October 15, 2016 from 9:00am to 12:00pm.

The free training was designed for educators, students, professionals and retirees, seeking to increase their understanding and support of services for the Commonwealth of Virginia’s most vulnerable children and families. The keynote speaker, Mark Kennedy Shriver (of the Kennedy political family and former member of the Maryland House of Delegates), was a tremendous inspiration for participants to do more as all continue in their advocacy. Shriver recounted moments with his father, Sargent “Sarge” Shriver founder of the Peace Corps and architect of President Johnson’s War on Poverty, that now take on new value.

             Among the fellow presenters were:
Deborah Weinstein, Executive Director, Coalition for Human Needs discussing, “Making TANF Work for Poor Families”

Senator Barbara Favola, 31st Senate District, Arlington, Report on the Commission on Youth, TANF Subcommittee

Delegate Alfonso Lopez, 49th House of Delegates District, Arlington “Tools for Effective Advocacy in the State Legislature”

Michelle Krocker, Executive Director, Northern Virginia Affordable Housing Alliance, "Addressing the Commonwealth's Unmet Housing Needs for Low-Income Households"

Kimberly Adams, President of the Fairfax County Council of PTAs, “Fairfax County's excellence is at risk”

A special highlight from the presenters included Delegate Lopez’s elevator pitch in which participants paired up, one serving as the lobbyist the other as the senator.

The organizers were excited to see strong attendance of at least 70 members of the local community and students from VIU’s Master of Public Administration program. Subsequent feedback as submitted to John Horejsi included: “Best SALT conference ever! Strong program and keynote!” VIU & SPIA welcomes and continued relationship with SALT and looks forward to hosting further events in the next upcoming year.

Meet Rolake Olajubu!

My name is Rolake Olajubu from Nigeria and I am a student of VIU studying my Master of Science in International Relations (Business).

I became interested in this field towards the end of my first degree (B.A English) in Nigeria because I felt I needed to go for something more challenging and benefiting. Since coming to this school, while it indeed been a lot more challenging academically, I have gained the tools to learn how to overcome these challenges. My favorite part of taking this program at VIU and what I appreciate, is knowing firsthand that they invested in quality education by providing highly qualified, intelligent professors as well as tutors. Thanks to them, I have been able to broaden my horizons tremendously.

I am looking forward to graduating and using my degree to work within the government or choose a non-governmental job opportunity that comes my way. Ultimately, I know the choice is mine and I am one step closer to my goals!

Book Presentation: Development, Poverty and Power in Pakistan

On Tuesday, October 4, 2016 SPIA and the Center for Democracy will host an invited talk with author Syed Mohammed Ali.  Dr. Ali is a development anthropologist with over a decade of experience working on issues of marginalization and empowerment. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in Pakistan, Australia and the U.S. and he also writes a weekly op-ed for Express Tribune, an affiliate of the International New York Times (see:  http://tribune.com.pk/author/1293/syed-mohammad-ali/)

Dr. Ali's book Development, Poverty and Power in Pakistan has been highly acclaimed. It addresses a very current and important topic:
"Rural development remains a major challenge for governments of developing countries such as Pakistan. While a broad range of state and donor interventions impact the lives of poor farmers - who provide a significant proportion of the labor force - comprehensive consideration of these combined interactions remains inadequate. Focusing on Pakistan, this book discusses the political economy of agrarian poverty and underdevelopment in the region, which in turn enable the landed rural elite to benefit from market-based and capital-intensive processes of agricultural growth, without offering substantial opportunities for poor farmers”.

A Short Analysis of the ISIS Attack against Istanbul Airport

The well-coordinated terror attack against Istanbul Ataturk Airport, once again, has dragged the international community’s attention to the ISIS terror. The nature of ISIS attacks in Turkey can be analyzed in two major ways: the targets of ISIS and why Turkey fails to prevent such attacks.

Examining the targets of ISIS attacks, one can see that the organization has two major targets. The first is the Kurdish Nationalists, a group affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and closely associated with the Democratic Union Party of Syria (PYD), the key ally of the US against ISIS in Syria. The second target of ISIS is tourists and tourism spots in Turkey.

ISIS attacks secular Kurdish nationalists to deepen its fight against PYD inside Turkey with the hope to polarize Turkish community against Kurdish nationalists to benefit from such polarization. In fact, when ISIS killed more than 100 people in Ankara last year, Turkish soccer fan in Konya chanted for ISIS showed their sympathy to the attack.  Law enforcement records clearly indicates that most of early members of ISIS are religious Kurds however, since the ISIS has launched attacks against Kurdish nationalists, number of Turkish militants in ISIS network has increased.

ISIS targets tourist and tourism spots in Turkey to retaliate against Turkish government’s actions against ISIS. When Turkish military effectively shell ISIS targets inside Syria and cause ISIS to lose significantly, ISIS targets tourists in Turkey to “punish” the government’s decision.

Given the fact that majority of Turkish society, particularly those who have sympathy toward the Islamist Justice and Development Part (AKP) government, would not approve any direct attack against government facilities, ISIS knowingly avoid targeting government facilities in order not to lose sympathy of those people, mainly political İslamist circles, who have sympathy toward the government, the ruling Islamist Party and the cause of ISIS.  For instance, Turkish military has been tightening the border control against ISIS and right before the Istanbul Airport attack, ISIS has lost strategically important town of Menbij in Syria. Turkish military has helped Syrian Democratic Forces against ISIS. In reaction to Turkish policy, ISIS hit Istanbul airport to punish the government.

Difficult Roads Often Leads to Beautiful Destinations

“Heights by great men reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight, but they while their companion slept, were toiling upward in the night”. (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow)

It takes great courage in choosing to thrive, in spite of a slow economy, in spite of financial difficulties and in spite of lack of support from people around you. The great news is, the moment you sincerely make the decision to thrive, inevitable obstacles will not stop you. Indeed, you would have gotten the will power to persevere and achieve.  Graduates, we should be humbled and grateful for today, for today manifest that we have persevered and have achieved.

Being approximately 7200 miles away from the school campus and being a full-time employee, I had to choose to be punctual, choose to keep up and choose to learn to resist temptations and disruptions that would negatively affect my work and my study. I’ve been faced with natural disasters and technical difficulties studying from afar but I remain resilient throughout.

Most certainly, faith, planning and preparation reaps success. Success that you work long, hard and diligently for, success that is worthy of recognition and success that we should always proceed to achieve. It’s not easy and will never be but difficult roads often leads to beautiful destinations and, indeed, look around you. . Mission accomplished! Congratulations to us.
